Engineering geology analysis of the formation mechanism of a new red intercalated mud

Red intercalated mud is a familiar interlayer in hydropower engineering.Taking the red intercalated mud found in abutment of a hydropower plant in Hubei as an example,based on the result of mineral compositions,chemical compositions and physical properties,and combined with the local information,the authors find the formation mechanism of red intercalated mud after analyzing possible reasons of structure,normal weathering and unloading,slope distortion,and karst collapse.The red intercalated mud is filled into rock mass going with ground water because karst collapse leads to samdwich rock mass ripped.
