Dynamics of Late Triassic Longmenshan foreland basin,China

The Late Triassic Longmenshan foreland basin developed as a flexural foredeep on the Yangtze passive continental margin during Indosinian orogeny,spanning the time period c.335~208 Ma.The basin fill overlying a basal boundary is a tectonic sequence bounded by unconformities,including Maantang Formation,Xiaotangzi Formation and Xujiahe Formation and can be divided into four sequences(tectonostratigraphic units)by unconformities and flooding surface.Sequence 1 shows the establishment and drowning of a distal margin carbonate ramp and sponge build-up,deepening into offshore marine muds,followed by progradation of marginal marine siliciclastics.Sequence 2 is typified by coarse,proximal sandstone and conglomerates.Sequence 3 is marked by the severing of the basin's oceanic connection,a major lake flooding and the gradual establishment of major deltaic-paralic systems that prograded from the eroding Longmenshan orogeo.Sequence 4 is typified by coarse,proximal conglomerates,commonly truncating underlying rocks,which fine upwards into lacustrine shales.Though the cross-sectional geometry of the foreland basin fill is typified by the wedge-shaped body,but it can be divided into wedge-shaped sequence and tabular sequence.Sequence 1 and Sequence 3 belong to the wedge-shaped sequence,and Sequence 2 and Sequence 4 belong to the tabular sequence.The foreland basin stratigraphy has been further investigated using a simple analytical model based on the deflection by supercrustal loads of a continuous elastic plate overlying a fluid substratum.The closest match between model predictions and stratigraphic observations is for a relatively rigid plate with flexural rigidity on the order of(0.5~5)×1024 N·m(equivalent elastic thickness of c.43~54 km).The orogenic load system initially advanced rapidly(15 mm/a)towards the Yangtze Block in the Carnian,associated with the rapid closure of the Songpan-Ganzi ocean,before slowing to 5 mm/a during the sedimentation of the upper two tectonostratigraphic units.
