Study on morphological characteristics of karst landform based on the fractal theory

The morphological characteristics of karst landform are of important guiding significance in the theoretical study of the karst development and in human engineering activities.This paper analyses the peak-cluster depressions of 40 km2 in southeast Yungui Plateau based on the fractal theory.The results show that the(1) depressions develop randomly or like cluster,some depressions form along faults and become larger,(2)Depression distribution shows apparent fractal characteristics;there are two scale ranges whose radius dimensions of are 1.87 and 0.60,respectively.The density of depressions decreases outward from its center,(3)Terrain contour has fractal characteristics.The fractal dimension of 1 850 m contour in the limestone area and 1 650 m in the non-limestone area are 1.30 and 1.14,reflecting that the landform of a karst area is more complex due to dissolution and(4)Dimension of the surface water network is 1.066,reflecting that the relative degree of groundwater network and karst development in this area is generally high.The fractal theory provides a method to research the karst development degree indirectly.
