Leaf Morphology Characteristics and Variation Analysis of Chinese Registered Alfalfa Varieties

The leaf morphology characteristics of 29 Chinese alfalfa registered varieties were studied by using leaf area scanner.The results show that local varieties were smaller than bred varieties in aspects of leaf length,leaf width,leaf area,and leaf perimeter;no difference was detected for leaf shape factor.Local varieties had higher variation coefficient than bred varieties at leaf area,leaf length,leaf perimeter,and ratio,but lower in aspects of leaf width and leaf shape factor.Among the bred varieties,Zhonglan No.1 alfalfa had largest variation coefficient and the Gannong No 3 least;for the local varieties,Yuxian alfalfa had largest but Hexi least variation coefficient.The result of this study offered theoretical basis for breeding new alfalfa varieties in the future.
