SHI Ri-li,et al.(Foreign Language School of Jiangsu University,Zhenjiang 212013,China)
By analyzing the characteristics of the diplomatic policy adopted by the United States to China in modern times we can have a deeper understanding of the influence of the "open door policy".The opposite change of altitudes held by the USA on the Boxer Indemnity and the opinions of experts from different American social fields reveal the underlying purposes of the USA,that is,to gain economic interests and speed up its cultural invade in China, thus enhancing and strengthening its dominant diplomatic status. The policy of returning parts of the Boxer Indemnity to finance Chinese students in the USA reflects both the realistic diplomatic demands but also the cultural purposes of the United States. However, the policy objectively stimulates the development of science and education in China.
