Investigation on Microstructures of Rapidly Solidified Mg-6wt.%Zn Alloy Prepared by Atomization-twin Rolls Quenching Technology

The atomization-twin rolls quenching technology is utilized to successfully prepare the rapidly solidified Mg-6wt.%Zn alloy in the form of flakes,and the microstructures and phase constitutions of the alloy are investigated by scanning electron microscope,X-ray diffraction,differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy.The results suggest that the rapidly solidified Mg-6Zn alloy is characteristic of fine equiaxed grains,the phase constituent of the alloy is composed of supersaturate solid solution phase α-Mg,Mg51Zn20 and a small quantity of MgZn2 and Mg2Zn3.The microstructures of the alloy are significantly refined with the atomization-twin rolls quenching technology and some dislocations can also be observed in the alloy.
