Controllable Synthesis of Nano-Sized TiO_2 with PEG and Its Photocatalytic Activity

Nano-sized titanium dioxide powders with controllable morphology and crystallite phase were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process assisted by polyethylene glycol (PEG). XRD, TEM, SEM, TG-DTA, IR and N_2 adsorption-desorption isotherms were used to character different samples. The morphology and crystallite phase of nanoparticles can be controlled by concentration of PEG in this reaction system. The mesoporous structure of obtained nanoparticles was revealed by the adsorption and desorption isotherms and the pore size distribution curve. The optimum nanocrystals were of high BET surface area (279.5 m~2/g). Photocatalytic experiments under UV light demonstrated that the sample with PEG assisted exhibited better photocatalytic degradation effect (94.4%) of X-3B than TiO_2 without PEG assisted done.
