A modified Otsu segmentation algorithm based on preprocessing by Top-hat transformation

Otsu segmentation algorithm is used for image threshold segmentation widely, but it can’t segment images with low or variable contrast exactly. By the help of concept of Top-hat transformation in mathematical morphology, a modified Otsu method is proposed, by which the original images are processed with Top-hat transformation firstly and then segmented by Otsu method. The results of simulation experiments show that the method has advantages of low algorithmic complexity , easy realization, and can segment the special images which Otsu can’s deal with effectively. It has more perfect robustness than Otsu
