After starvation for 4~20 days, the number of red blood cells(RBC),hematocrit(HCT),blood specific gravity(BSG)and erythrocyte osmotic brittjeness(EOB)of the Japanese eel ( Anguilla japonica Temminck et Schlegel)all decreased. The hemoglobin (Hb) content stabilized after increased to a certain level. The EOB could be used as a good index for indicating the nutrition status of the Japanese eel because it was sensitive to starvation.
