Study on Haemocyte Classifacation in Four Species of Clams

Haemocyte subpopulations from four clams(Ruditapes philippinarum,Mactra chinensis,Meretrix meretrix and Sanguinolaria purpuratus) were studied using flow cytometry and Foward light-scatter(FSC) and side light-scatter(SSC) signals.In the four clams,the haemocytes were classified into two groups: hyalinocytes or agranulocytes and granulocytes.The granulocytes were divided into two distinct subpopulations: small granulocytes and big granulocytes in Mactra chinensis and Sanguinolaria purpuratus.The granulocytes were divided into three distinct subpopulations: small granulocytes,intermediate granulocytes and big granulocytes in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum.The granulocytes can not be divided into distinct subpopulations in the clam Meretrix meretrix.The ratios of the subpopulations within the bitmaps to the whole haemocytes were calculated and they were different in the four clams.
