On the base of investigation of content of soil heavy metals in Nanjing region, the pollution status of soil heavy metals, which include Pb, Zn, Cr, Hg and Cu, were evaluated according to the Standard of Soil Environment Quality (GB 15168-1995).The result showed that the pollution of soil metals in Nanjing suburb was mainly on Hg and Zn, and the most seriously polluted area was around Jiangning region. The analyses of the reasons of soil pollution showed that it was mostly caused by the wastes of industries and mineral factories, or by the using of fertilizers and pesticides, or by reutilization of living garbage. The vegetable land and the paddy fields among the three kinds of lands investigated, are more seriously polluted and manmade disturbance is the main reason of soil heavy metal pollution.
