Under the arid condition and human impact,the urban areas in the northwest of Chine have a higher areosol content than other places.Some anthropogenic heavy elements in the urban areosol are poisonous to the local inhabitants.In the spring of 1994 dust samples were taken from four urban areas in the northwest of China.It is found that the level of toxic heavy elements is higher in the industrial and populous cities and lower in the small towns.The dominant toxic heavy elements in the urban areoslo of arid hand of China are lead and arsenic.Automobile exhaust,coal combustion and industrial emission are the main sources of toxic heavy elements in the urban areosol.
