Graft modification of branched polyethylene wax with acrylic acid and emulsifying process

Branched polyethylene wax(BPE) was modified by graft reaction with acrylic acid as grafting monomer,tert-butyl hydro peroxide(TBHP) as initiator and xylene as solvent.Results showed that the modified BPE(MBPE) with acid value of 12.5 mg·g-1 could be prepared under conditions as:m(grafting monomer)∶ m(BPE)=6∶ 100,m(TBHP)∶ m(BPE)=0.3∶ 100;reaction temperature,140 ℃;reaction time,8 h.IR spectrum showed that carboxyl group has been introduced into the BPE molecule.The MBPE product was emulsified by phase inversion method and shearing emulsification process with blended emulsifying agent.Results showed that the MBPE product is easily to be emulsified.Under conditions as:m[ethoxylated branch tridecanol(5EO)]∶ m(MBPE)=10∶ 100,m(sodium lauryl sulfate)∶ m(MBPE)=5∶ 100,95-100 ℃ of emulsifying temperature,and continuous shearing for 30-40 min,a steady MBPE emulsion with average particle size of 1.7 μm can be obtained.
