The Estimation of Local Covariance Function in Least Squares Collocation

With the development of GPS technique,especially its accuracy in height determination, it becomes possible to derive the normal heights (or orthometric heights) from geodetic heights determined by GPS. The geoid undulation plays an important role in this kind of applications. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is one of the methods usually used in geoid determination, but it can handle only homogeneous gridded measurements. Different observations can be used to determine the geoid by least squares collocation , and it is very important to use an appropriate covariance function. In this paper, a local covariance function is fitted according to three empirical parameters computed from the gravity anomalies.
