It is a critical work to drive topographic structure in geo spatial analysis. DEM has commonly accepted as a convenient methodology in extracting terrain features. On the basis of a comprehensive summarizing and reviewing of existing results, this paper compares the basic theories and methods in deriving terrain variables from DEMs, which is hopefully of significance for the further development in this aspect.
