Derivation of skeleton line from topographic map with DEM data

Skeleton lines are lines that indicate significant topographic features of the terrain. It is widely used in the field of surveying and mapping, topography representation and engineering designing. After investigating into the methods for derivation of skeleton line, authors conclude that it is very important to make fully use of data information in derivation of skeleton line, and put forward a new method for derivation of skeleton line with this view. In the new method, DEM is set up and used to get a rough set of skeleton lines. The rough skeleton lines are used to help to construct the ordering of feature points extracted from contour lines. Experimental result has proven the new method is quite effective and reliable in its identification of significant terrain features.
