Research on spatial directional relation description model

XIA Yu①,ZHU Xin-yan②,QIN Kun①(①School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430079,China;②State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying,Mapping and Remote Sensing,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430079,China)
Spatial directional relation,as an important aspect of spatial relation,is one of principal problems of GIS theory, which plays a key role in spatial query, spatial analysis, spatial reasoning, mapping generalization, and so on.Nowadays research on spatial directional relation is relatively behind on topological relation. This paper classifies the spatial directional relation formal description models, and demonstrates the detail methods of the spatial directional relation formal description models. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of respective model are given, and the existent problems and future research directions are also discussed.
