Study on land classification using multi-temporal ASAR data

In the past few decades,remote sensing techniques have been used widely in land study.Recently,researchers are thinking much of SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) technique due to abundant information in the observation.Envisat ASAR(Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) is one of the most popular SAR systems(such as ERS-1/2 SAR,Radarsat).Its applications include the study of snow and ice extent,land surface study,soil moisture and wetland extent,etc. Compared with single observation,multi-temporal observation supplies plenteous information of land surface.In this study,a region covered 100 100km2,located at west Nyainqntanglha mountains is selected.Land classification based on four ASAR data is performed.Results indicate that each land cover type has uniform rule of backscatter coefficient variation in different time.In other words,a land cover type can be classified with the rule uniquely.Using this classification method,grass,meadow,bare rock,ice and water can be identified distinctly;especially water and ice have excellent precision.
