Extraction of heights of buildings in city from shadows in QuickBird image

TIAN Xin-guang, ZHANG Ji-xian, ZHANG Yong-hong(Chinese Academy of surveying & Mapping, Beijing 100039, China)  
Height information is the important attribute information of buildings and has a very good value both in military and civil use. In this paper, we propose a new method to extract the height of buildings applied on high-resolution remote sensing imagery based on object-oriented classification. The method can be divided into three phases:①extraction of roofs and shadows using object-oriented classification;②optimization of the classification result (roofs and shadows);③calculating the lengths of shadows and the heights of buildings. It is shown by our experiment that the method has a potential application in the extraction of building height.
