THE ROLE OF DRYING AND CALCINATION IN THE PREPARATION OF HIGHLY DISPERSED Pt/Υ-Al_2O_3 CATALYST

The role of drying and calcination in the preparation of highly dispersed Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst by impregnating γ-Al2O3 with H2PtCl8 solution was characterized with UV-visible reflectance spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (TPR), solubility in 1:4 H2SO4, and thermal stability. UV-visible spectra and TPR profiles showed the presence of adsorbed species of PtCl62+, which interact with γ-Al2O3 during drying. The even distribution of the adsorbed species and the interaction with Al2O3 surface ensured the high dispersity of the active ingredients. During calcination of the catalyst either in air or in inert gas atmosphere in the temperature range of 300 - 500℃, the formation of surface complex ( Al-O)4Pt seemed to be very plausible as evidenced by the UV-visible spectra, TPR profiles, solubility in 1:4 H2SO4 and thermal stability. This surface complex was assumed to be: responsible for the ultimate result of high dispersion (with H/Pt=1) for the reduced Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. TPR measurements indicated that the catalyst upon calcination at a temperature higher than 600℃, the decomposition of part of the surface species to metallic platinum was almost simutaneous with the aggregation of large particles.
