Copper-chromium oxide catalysts are especially effective for the hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds to corresponding alcohols. The active components of copper-chromium oxide catalysts for the hydrogenation of acetophenone to phenyl methyl carbinol have been studied by X-ray diffraction analysis and differential thermal analysis. The results indicate that copper-chromium oxides contain CuO, Cr2O3, CuCr2O4 and amorphous phase. Hydrogenation activity tests show that CuO, Cr2O3, CuCr2O4 alone and the simple mechanical mixture of CuO and Cr2O3 or CuO and CuCr2O4 are all non-active, however, CuO supported on carrier Cr2O3 or CuCr2O4 is verified as the active component, thus, the activity of the copper-chromium oxide catalysts is attributed to a certain kind of close combination of CuO with Cr2O3 or CuCr2O4. The deactivation and the change of composition of the catalyst during hydrogenation process prove that CuO and CuCr2O4 are reduced to inactive Cu0 and Cu+ respectively, and as a result, the catalyst is deactivated.
