CATALYTIC PROPERTIES OF AI_2O_3-PILLARED MONTMORILLONITE FOR THE ALKYLATION OF TOLUENE WITH PROPYLENE

The A12O3-pillared clays were prepared by the cation exchanging with Al hydroxyl cluster cation, employing montmorillonite as starting sheet silicates, and used as acidic catalysts for the alkylation of toluene with propylene. Property of Al2O3-pillared montmorillonite was determined by XRD,TPD and specific area. When A12O3 was introduced into the interlayer of montmorillonite, the interlayered montmorillonite had an interlayer spacing of 0.89 nm and showed a surface area of130m2/g seven times higher than that of montmorillonite. The activity of the catalysts for toluene alkylation was found to be proportional to the total acid amount. At transient-state activity (about an hour after the start of run), the toluene conversion and cymene yield increased as the reaction temperature decreased. The optimum temperature was 50-70℃.
