Recent Advances in Research of Catalysts for Ammonia Synthesis

LIU Huazhang (Catalysis Institute of Zhejiang University of Technology, Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Heterogeneous Catalysis, Hangzhou 310014, China)  
In the last 20 years, the research and development of catalysts for ammonia synthesis have attracted again much attention with the invention of Ru catalysts by BP company in England and with the creation of a non classical molten Fe catalyst by Zhejiang University of Technology in China, which marks that the unique classical technique route has been developed into three routes, making their important progress respectively. The main research results for and the development trend of the classical Fe 3O 4 based catalyst and Ru catalysts are reviewed briefly. The new research results for the development and the high activity mechanism of the non classical Fe 1- x O based molten Fe catalyst are reported. The development course of the ammonia synthesis industry and the catalysts used in it from foundation, development, to brilliant results obtained are summarized, and the future trend in the 21st century is put forward.
