Investigation of Acid Properties and Structure of ZSM-5 Zeolite Treated with Alkaline Steaming

The acid properties, structure and specific surface area of commercial ZSM-5 zeolite (n(Si)/n(Al)=25), treated with steam containing 10%NH 3 at different temperatures, were investigated. The samples were characterized by XRD, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3-TPD) and measurement of nitrogen isotherms of adsorption-desorption. The XRD results showed that the crystallinity of HZSM-5 samples does not change pronouncedly indicating the retaining of structure. The NH 3-TPD results revealed that the acidity decreases remarkably, the weak acid distribution increases, while the strong acid distribution decreases relatively with the increase of temperature. According to the results of N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, it can be seen that the surface area and microporous volume decrease, while the mesoporous volume and external surface area increase. A distinct increase of adsorbate volume in low p/p 0 region in type Ⅳ isotherms indicates the presence of micropores associated with mesopores, and the isothermal type of all samples is a combination of type Ⅰand type Ⅳ. All hysteresis loops resemble the H 4-type in IUPAC classification.
