Catalytic Dechlorination of 2,4-Dichlorophenol in Water by Nanoscale Pd/Fe Bimetallic System

Nanoscale Fe and nanoscale Pd/Fe bimetallic catalysts were prepared by chemical deposition and used to treat 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in water. These nanoscale particles are characterized by high surface area to volume ratios and high reactivity. Their BET specific surface area reaches 12.4 m 2/g. Batch experiments demonstrate that the nanoscale Pd/Fe particles can effectively dechlorinate 2,4-DCP at a relatively low metal to solution ratio of 6 g/L. Dechlorination efficiency is 90% at a Pd to Fe mass ratio of 0.11%. Dechlorination is affected by the reaction temperature, pH, Pd/Fe ratio and amount of nanoscale Pd/Fe. 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol represent stable partially dechlorinated intermediates in the generation of phenol.
