Study on the Hydrodesulfurization Active Phase in Sulfided NiW/Al_2O_3 Catalyst Ⅰ. XPS and HREM Characterizations

A series of sulfided NiW/Al 2O 3 catalyst samples with a constant W loading and various Ni contents were prepared by incipient wetness co-impregnation method, and the samples were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) to get a better understanding of the nature of the active phase. XPS and HREM characterizations showed that the Ni promoter preferentially decorated the edges of WS 2 slabs to form the highly active NiWS mixed phase. The significant synergy effect of about 30 times promoted by Ni in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction of thiophene was directly correlated to the concentration of NiWS phase. In addition, the introduction of Ni induced a slight increase of the WS 2 lamellas stacking from 2.8 layers to 3.2 layers and a diminution of their length from 4.1 to 3.8 nm, as well as an increasing sulfidability of WO x phase by about 20%. These morphology modifications made rather small contributions to the total HDS activity, which could not explain the drastic increase of the HDS activity.
