Preparation of Highly Photoactive Nanocrystalline Anatase TiO_2 by Low-Temperature Benzyl Alcohol Alcoholysis

A novel low-temperature approach based on benzyl alcohol alcoholysis has been developed to synthesize the nanocrystalline anatase TiO_2 photocatalyst with a high surface area.The catalysts were characterized by(X-ray) diffraction,thermal gravimetric-differential thermal analysis,transmission electron microscopy,Raman spectroscopy,diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy,and N_2 adsorption.The results showed that calcination temperature and calcination time had a profound influence on the microstructural properties as well as the activity of the nanocrystalline TiO_2 for photocatalytic degradation of phenol. The as-prepared fresh TiO_2 sample was consisted of well-crystallized anatase nanoparticles,and both the calcination temperature and time were the key parameters in determining the final microstructure and the resulting photocatalytic properties of the nanocrystalline TiO_2.The TiO_2 photocatalyst calcined at 400 ℃ for 3 h had the highest activity and exhibited photocatalytic performance superior to that of commercial Degussa(P-25.)
