The Dispersion Characteristics of Molybdenum and Tungsten on Alumina Surface

A series of supported molybdenum and/or tungsten catalysts were prepared on two kinds of alumina (calcined at 873 and 1 173 K, respectively). The dispersion characteristics of molybdenum and tungsten on alumina surface were studied by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, ammonia extraction, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, and hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene. The results showed that molybdenum preferably reacted with the basic and neutral hydroxyl groups while tungsten with the neutral hydroxyl groups. The addition of molybdenum enhances the reducibility of co-existing tungsten. After ammonia extraction, the residual molybdenum and tungsten on alumina have a strong interaction with alumina surface, but upon further calcination, a new equilibrium can be reached by their re-dispersion on alumina surface.
