MECHANISM OF METHYLCYCLOPENTANE RING OPENING ON EUROPt 1(Pt/SiO 2)

Methylcyclopentane ring opening on EuroPt 1 has been studied at atmosphere pressure firstly by transient kinetic method. 2 methylpentane and 3 methylpentane give a similar response which significantly differs from n hexane after suddenly introducing about 1 2 kPa methylcyclopentane to the reactor at 8 kPa hydrogen; the product ratio of 2 methylpentane to n hexane changes with the time and a minimum value of 0 32 and 0 61 was observed at 458 K and 473 K, respectively. The results show that two parallel reactions are taking place: one producing n hexane and the other forming 2 methylpentane and 3 methylpentane. Therefore the non selective mechanism as proposed in the literature is questioned.
