ALKYLATION OF NAPHTHALENE WITH VARIOUS ALKYLATING AGENTS OVER SOME ZEOLITES

The alkylation of naphthalene with MeOH, EtOH, iPrOH and tBuOH over zeolites HY, Hβ, HM and HZSM_5 was investigated. The catalytic activity of the zeolites mainly depended on their pore structure. The conversion of naphthalene on the zeolites decreased in the order of HYHβHMHZSM_5. The activity trend of alkylating agent was MeOHEtOHiPrOHtBuOH. The decrease of activity in isopropylation on HZSM_5 and in tertbutylation on the other zeolites was attributed to that the reaction product (alkylnaphthalene) molecules were too large to penetrate the zeolites. On the same zeolite, the alkylation selectivity for β-position rose with the increase of alkylating agent size. The βselectivity on the zeolites changed according to the reactant size. HZHM_5 gave the highest β-selectivity for methylation and ethylation. For isopropylation, HM exhibited high selectivity. It was supposed that the selectivity for β-position resulted from the synergism occurring between the zeolite pore structure and the shape of alkylation product.
