: Cartographic generalization is an improtant step in cartographic process- Its theory and practice are closely linked to human's cognitive activity. This paper studies the ac tion of visual sensation an perception on cartographic generalization. It includes three parts: (1) After analysing the function of visual sensation and perception, it is conclud ed that the cartographic generalization is the result of this function; (2) The constraints of the generalization are analysed and it is pointed out that the implementation of cart ographic generalization is controled by visual perception; (3) Discussion of the effect of visual perception and experience, especially the mental image about map making beha viour on the cartographic compilation and such a conclusion that the formularization of this mental image is the main factor leading to unreasonable generalized results.
