Combinatorial Representation of Spatial Relationships on 2D Vector Map

In cartographic data handling, the spatial objects in 2D vector maps are common ones, the representation and handling of its spatial relationships are very important. In this paper, the integration of topologic space and metric space and basic spatial relationships among points and straight line segmentation are discussed firstly. The basic spatial relationships include relationships between point and point, relationships between point and straight line segmentation, and relationships between two straight line segmentations. Then, based on these basic spatial relationships among points and straight line segmentation,the author attempted to distinguish and represent the spatial relationships among point, linear and area spatial objects with respect to combination. The count of every kind of spatial relationship is shown. The combination of basic spatial relationships results in 2 classes of spatial relationships between point and point, 5 classes of spatial relationships between point and line, and 3 classes of spatial relationships between point and area. The same method results in 65 classes of spatial relationships between line and line, 95 classes of spatial relationships between line and area, and 22 classes of spatial relationships between area and area.
