Effects of Impounding in Three Gorges Reservoir on Earth's Rotation

We utilize a realistic mass distribution model for the augmented water body in Three Gorges Reservoir during the filling period(1998—2009), and investigate the resultant earth's rotation perturbations from 1998 to 2129. The numerical results demonstrate that the polar motion and δJ 2 increase nearly linearly as the time between 2000 and 2009, the linearly regressed polar motion rate is 0.042 mas/a towards73.6°W and δ 2 0.025×10 -12 a -1 . These two values are respectively 8.4% and 2.5% of the quasi secular effects of other 88 large reservoirs in the world.
