Describing Spatial Relations between Area Objects via Combining Topology with Metrization

Some shortcomings of describing spatial relations based on the 9-intersection model are pointed out, and a new method with the combinations of topology and metrization of the point set is proposed. By means of this method, many cases of spatial relations between area objects can be distinguished, thus accuracy of spatial analysis will be improved, and some reasonable metric parameters and its computation methods are also given. In a word, processes of describing spatial relations will be classified as three steps: ① to find and locate spatial object; ② a rough classification for spatial relations between reference object and researched object based on the 9-intersection model; ③ on the basis of the second step, corresponding parameters will be introduced, thus to describe and distinguish spatial relations with more details.
