Estimating Formation Stress from Cross-dipole Acoustic Measurements

Described are an effective method and practical applications for determining the formation stress field using borehole cross-dipole acoustic logging data. In theory, the direction of the fast shear wave and the maximum major formation stress is consistent, and the value of the maximum major formation stress is related to velocity of shear wave; the method of determining the formation stress is based on a stress-velocity relation. Core analysis data and model test proved that as the exerted formation stress of sandstone with different porosities increases ,the shear wave velocity of the sandstone and the squared difference of the shear wave velocity when the stress is zero also go up gradually, i.e., the velocity has a simple linear relation to the exerted stress. Two fundamental parameters for estimating formation stress can be acquired from the stress-velocity relation chart. Given is a practical application of cross-dipole acoustic measurements in estimating formation stress in Dagang Oilfield.
