Permeability Evaluation of Carbonate Reservoirs through Stoneley Wave Energy Analysis

The Lower Paleozoic carbonate reservoirs in Jingxi of the Ordos Basin are characterized by well-developed inter-crystalline pores, vugs and fractures, and strong reservoir heterogeneity, making it difficult to accurately calculate the reservoir permeability. Moreover, the permeability model built using conventional logging curves cannot meet the required accuracy in industrial production. Based on the energy attenuation mechanism of the Stoneley wave in permeable formation, the energy characterization method of Stoneley wave is studied, and the energy parameter in the best correlation with permeability, namely, amplitude attenuation coefficient, is selected. The parameter is obtained by time window determination—amplitude calculation—linear fitting method, and then the quantitative calculation model of this parameter with the experimental permeability is built. Finally, a high-precision permeability calculation method is established, which is suitable for the evaluation of fractured, vuggy and porous carbonate reservoirs.
