Adopting least squares method in evaluating average consolidation of soil foundation with vertical drains

A method to find the average consolidation degress of stratified ground partially penetrated by vertical drains was proposed on the basis of consolidation theory and measured settlement data.The least squares optimization method was employed to fit the measured settlement data and to determine the parameters in the analytical expression of consolidation settlement. A typical example of applying this method to a stratified foundation with vertical drains under vacuum preloading was provided, and analysis on its applicability was made. The results show that the measured settlement data are in good agreement with the theoretical curve.
