Discussion on Shear Strength of Total Stress of Unsaturated Compacted Expansive Soil

Based on the engineering practice, experimental studies were performed for compacted expansive soils of different initial densities and moisture contents with the consolidated quick direct shear test method of unsaturated soils. The characteristics of shear strength of unsaturated soil under the condition of total stress were discussed. The results indicated that the strength of total stress increases with accretion of dry density and with decrease of moisture content; the changes in internal friction angles with moisture contents are small, but, the changes in cohesive forces are rather lager.
