DEVELOPMENTAL FEATURE OF THE SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF THE PORTS ON THE MIDDLE AND LOWER REACHES OF CHANG JIANG RIVER MAINSTREAM(1985 - 1997)

WANG Chuan-sheng, YANG Gui-shan, SHI Shao-hua (Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing 210008, China)
This paper deals with the developmental features of the spatial structure of the ports on the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River mainstream, from 1985 to 1997. Through statistic analysis, the research points out that concentration was a major developmental trend for these ports during the 12 years, but the whole course of concentration was not stable. The low value (less than 0.2) of HI index (which reflects the concentration of the ports) denotes a low level of concentration. On the other hand, dropping of HI during the 12 years in Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu (dropped respectively 0.009, 0.03, 0.043 ), implies obvious deconcentration in provincial region. Meanwhile, difference in HI index values among ports of the above three groups indicates discrepancy of their concentration level. And relevant research on the growth in handling volumes for ports in Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu, indicates a concentration trend towards ports on the lower reaches of Changjiang River, especially towards those ports in Jiangsu. The paper analyzes causes of the above changes, and indicates that the following four were the main reasons for such changes: (1 )port location and its physical conditions at the Changjiang River Basin that ports are supported; (2)construction of deeper-draw and container berths for the ports on the lower reaches of Changjiang Main River; (3) development for network of communication lines to link up the ports with their hinterlands, and (4) adjustment in national macro-economic policies and in administration systems of the ports. At last, the authors consider that concentration would still be the major trend for the ports on the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River. With concentration difference the major function of each of the ports will be differentiated. Those ports that pioneer in technical reform and in hinterland connection will become pivot ports on the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River.
