ON THE ROLE COMPLEX CUL TURE SYSTEMS OF ECONOMIC PLANTS IN SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION AND IN RESETTLEMENT ECONOMICS OF THE THREE-GORGE RESERVIOR AREA

Land Submergence and population resettlement will occur with the construction of the Three-Gorge Electric Power Project.The ecological environment in this area would be worsening ifcorresponding countermeasures are not taken. This paper puts forward a new proposal whichmaintains the cultivation of econmic plants to constitue complex economic forest systems in order to comtrol soil and water loss and to develop resettlement economics.Planting farm crops should not be advocated in this area to avoid aggravating soil and water loss. The advantages ofsuch systems with reference to soil kand water conservation and resettlement econmics in the reservior area are discussed.
