THOUGHTS ABOUT DEVELOPING RESERVOIR FISHERIES IN THE YANGTZE BASIN

Cui Xiqun\ \ Liang Youguang\ \ Lin Ziyang (The Institute of Reservoir Fisheries,Ministry of Water Resources and The Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan,430079)
Over the Yangtze Basin there is an aggregation of reservoires containing a big potential for the development fisheries. The protection of cultivated land is a basic policy of China because of the increasing population and the decreasing cultivated land.Accordingly,it will be impossible to increase the fishery production by way of digging fishponds at the expense of cultivated land. Our four traditional marine fishery products could no loger sustain a fishing season on account of overfishing. The reduction in the number and area of lakes and the pollution of rivers and streams to various extent caused the drop in fishery production. On the other hand, the number of artificial lake reservoir will be increasing along with the lapse of time and the prosperity of our economy. From a long term view point, our fishery development will transfer gradually from fishpond, inshore, river and lake to reservoir in the Yangtze Basin and even in the whole country. It seems to be an inevitable trend. In the exploitation of reservoir fisheries attention must be paid to research and development on the model of cultivation and fish breeding so that reservoir fisheries can develop sustainably and get remarkable social and economic benefits.
