This paper deals with the classification of kerogen types, probes into the effectiveness and limitation of indexes obtained by Rock-Eval analysis, coal-petrolo-gical composition, maceral examination, electron microscope scanning, thermal analysis ( Pyrolysis ) , element composition, infrared spectrum and carbon isotopic composition of kerogen for differentiating kerogen types, and approaches the correlation of index boundaries. The discussion is centred on the classification difference between types identified by the data of thermal analysis for rocks ( Rock-Eval ) and those of the mea- surements of kerogen concentrtes. Besides, the reason for the differences is also analysed. Various methods of analysing kerogen have revealed the composition and properties of kerogen from different aspects,but each method has own limitations.Rock-Eval analysis may be influenced by the effects of carbonates decomposition on oxygen index ( Io ) and of adsorption of clay mineral on hydrogen index ( I_H) in correctly distinguishing kerogen types, although it has been noted for fast ,economic and bulk analysing. It is not often exact to identify the types especially for the rocks with lower organic abundance and the type III of kerogen with higher amount of organic carbon. During the isolation of kerogens,it is hard to avoid that different macerals are selectively enriched, so that the kerogen composition cannot represent its composition state. For these resons, it is necessary to make a comprehensive differentiation among various data for the identification of kerogen types. Generslly, the corelations among various classification indexes are shown as follows:
