A Mathematical Model on the Quantitative Provenance Identification──Take the identification of the surface sediment sources from ECS as example

A mathematical model on quantitative provenance identification based on the principle of mass balance was addressed in this paper. Using the model, the ratio of different origin in the whole sediment could be calculated. This model is prior to the previous ones with the constrain conditions that every provenance ratio large than zero and sum of ratios lower or equal one. As an example, the origins of the surface sediments taken from the East China Sea (ECS) were calculated with the model. The calculated results characterized the distributions and dispersals of the matter from the Yellow River (including abandoned Yellow River Delta) and the Yangtze River basically. Namely, the matter from Yangtze River distributed in the area south of 32°N, wes of the Taiwang warm current, and the matter from Yellow River (including abandoned Yellow River Delta ) distributed in the area north of 32°N, east of the Taiwang warm current. These distribution patterns agree with the sea water circulation environment in the ECS very well.
