Critical Conditions to Current Density for Micro-Arc Oxidation of Aluminum Alloy

An MAO200/750 micro-arc oxidation equipment was performed for the micro-oxidation of deformable aluminum alloy 6061 in the presence of 2% phosphate solution as the electrolyte so as to decrease the energy loss and increase the efficiency of the micro-oxidation process. Thus the relationships among the current density and oxidation duration, the voltage and sample size, the voltage and occupation-ratio, and the oxidation duration and occupation-ratio were studied. Results showed that the critical current density for the micro-arc oxidation of aluminum alloy was 0.2 A/dm~2, and the micro-arc oxidation voltage was directly proportional to the sample size. Moreover, the micro-arc oxidation duration of the Al alloy decreased with decreasing duty ratio, while the micro-arc oxidation voltage was inversely proportional to the duty ratio.
