Mechanism of the Formation of Fe_3O_4 and α-FeOOH on the Surface of Carbon Steel In 3% NaCl Solution

An accelerated corrosion test of immersion-dry-wet combined cycles was performed in 3% NaCl solution, and corrosion products were analyzed by IR and TEM . It was found that a-FeOOH and Fe3O4 were transformed from β-FeOOH automatically, and α-FeOOH and Fe3O4 were loose with big grain sizes, which are all related with high corrosion rate of carbon steel in marine environments.
