Influence of Glycerol on Micro-Arc Oxidation Process and Properties of the Ceramic Coatings on AZ91D Magnesium Alloy

Ceramic coatings were fabricated on AZ91D Mg-alloy substrate from the electrolyte of Na2SiO3 with and without glycerol addition using micro-arc oxidation technique.The effects of glycerol on the micro-arc oxidation process and the microstructure and prop-erties of the ceramic coalings were studied,based on analyses of the thickness and morphology and phase compositions of the ce-ramic coalings by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.Results showed that the destructive marginal dsi-charge was effectively restrained by addition of glycerol.The thickness of the micro-arc oxidation coatings decreased gradually with increasing concentration of glycerol in the electrolyte.More-over,the ceramic coatings obtained in the electrolyte with glycer-ol bad much smaller pores and less micro-cracks than that ob-tained in the electrolyte without glycerol.And the introduction of glycerol had little effect on the phase composition of the ceramic coatings,though it led to increase in the intensity of the X-ray diffraction peak of MgO and slight decrease in the intensity of the X-ray diffraction peak of Mg2SiO4.
