Current Situation and Prospect of Electrolyte Systems and Additives for Micro-Arc Oxidation of Magnesium Alloy

A review was provided of the current status and progress of electrolyte systems including phosphate electrolyte system, silicate electrolyte system, aluminate electrolyte system and composite electrolyte system for micro-arc oxidation of magnesium alloy. The advantages and disadvantages of various types of electrolyte systems were detailed. Furthermore, the features and current status of various additives were analyzed. It was proposed that environmentally friendly composite electrolytes along with use of appropriate additives should be highly focused on in terms of the development direction of micro-arc oxidation technology.
