Current Status of Surface Modifications on γ-TiAl Intermetallics

HE Zhiyong,LIU Xiaoping,WANG Zhenxia, XU Zhong(Research Institute of Surface Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024)  
γ-TiAl intermetallics possesse superb high temperature mechanical properties and very low density, and is believed to be the potential substitute to nickel-base super alloys which are widely used as high temperature structural materials in aero-industry currently. A major drawback of γ-TiAl is insufficient oxidation resistance at high temperature, especially above 800℃. Besides, the tribological performance of γ-TiAl is also unsatisfactory. Surface modification is feasible solution to these problems. In this paper, a review of studies on surface modification of γ-TiAl is presented and comments are made about various processes on the basis of modification effects and mechanisms.
