Review of the Study on Porous Magnesium as a New Bone Tissue Engineering Biomaterial

Porous magnesium has obvious advantages as bone tissue engineering biomaterial. The present review introduces the preparation methods of porous magnesium and assesses biocompatibility of magnesium and its alloys as bone tissue engineering biomaterial. Possible bioactive surfaces on magnesium and its alloys are analyzed. Degradation principles of magnesium and its alloys in vivo are briefly discussed and the medical prospects of porous magnesium as a new bone tissue engineering biomaterial are shown with some problems needing to be solved.

9 Song Cun-xian, Cui Xiu-min, Shi Rui-wen and Leng Xi-gang (The Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Tianjin ) ABSTRACT Implantable microporous capsules containing Levonorgestrel (LNG ) for female colltraceptive use were made using a biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL ) with pore-forming materiale. The size of the micropores were tai- lored by suitably selecting the pore-forming material with certain molecuar weight. Pores of 1-5μm in diameter were formed when a polyether with molecular weight of 6000-10000 was used. In vitro LNG release from the porous capsule has followed for 100 days using the drug capsules with various length/drug weight ratio. The results showed that the LNG release rate (pg/day. cm of capsule ) was remained stable until 80% of drug enclosed was exhausted. As one can expected from a zero order release systm,the release rate of LNG was independent on the length/drug ratio, for instance, 27.8± 4.2μg/day. cm for drug/length ratio of 12.3mg/cm, 26.6±3.2 for 6.0 and 23.5±6.8 for 1. 1.
