Microwave-assisted Synthesis of Octadecyl Acrylate Polyester

Octadecyl acrylate polyester is prepared by microwave heating from octadecyl acrylate monomer in the presence of an initiating agent, BPO, in the toluene. The effects of microwave power and processing time, the concentration of initiating agent and the solvent on the polymer reaction are investigated. IR, GPC, DSC are employed to characterize the structure, molecular weight and distribution, Tm, and the energy of melting. Microwave-assisted technology has proven to be a excellent method of providing energy for the polymerization reaction, and the molecular structure of the product is in good a-greement with those reported in the literature. The molecular weight of the polymer is 13259, with a narrow distribution of 1.50 (Mw/Mn), when treated under at a power of 195W for 15 min. The intrinsic viscosity is 13.2mL·g-1 and the yield reaches 84.6%.Superiority of microwave-assisted synthesis is fully reflected in terms of efficiency and energy-saving.
